How to Play Steady Spades
Steady Spades is a partnership card game for four players. You sit at the bottom of the table. Across from you is Grounded — the calm friend who has your back. You two are a team. On your left is Spiral, on your right is Doomscroll, and they are the other team. First team to 300 points wins the match.
The promise
Every hand, each player gets 13 cards, then everybody makes a promise — a bid for how many tricks they think they will personally win. Your promise and Grounded’s promise add up into your team’s contract. Same on the other side. You do not have to promise big. You just have to promise honest.
The Full Reset
Promising 0 is called a Full Reset. It means you are trying to win zero tricks on purpose — not one. Pull it off and your team gets plus 100 points. Catch even a single trick and it is minus 100. Your partner still plays toward their own promise like normal. It is a brave, quiet kind of move: clear the table, take nothing, breathe.
Playing a trick
- The player left of the dealer leads the first card of each trick. Play moves around the table.
- If you have a card in the suit that was led, you must follow that suit. Cards you cannot legally play are dimmed — tap one and the game log will tell you why, gently.
- The highest card of the led suit wins the trick, and whoever wins leads the next one.
- No card in the led suit? You may throw off a card from another suit — or drop a spade and take the trick.
Spades are trump
Spades beat every other suit. But spades cannot be led until they are broken — meaning somebody has already played a spade on an earlier trick because they could not follow suit. The one exception: if your whole hand is spades, you may lead one. The log calls it out the moment spades break.
Scoring
- Make your team’s combined promise: 10 points per promised trick, plus 1 point for each extra trick.
- Those extra tricks are Spiral Bags. They pile up across hands, and every time a team collects 10 bags, the Spiral Tax hits: minus 100 points, and the bag count starts over.
- Miss your promise and your team is Spiraled Out: minus 10 points for every trick you promised.
- Full Reset: plus 100 for zero tricks taken, minus 100 if the bidder catches any.
Winning the match
First team to 300 points wins. If both teams cross 300 on the same hand, the higher score takes it. A tie at the top means you keep playing — steady wins, nobody gets rushed.
That is the whole game. Promise what you can hold, back your partner, and let the gremlins overpromise.
Steady Spades is a subscriber perk
You can look at the table all day — it is a pretty table. Playing it is for subscribers: the full match to 300, Grounded at your back, and the gremlins across the felt.
